Dutch Oven Dome: How To Cook With A Dome & Heat Diffuser Plate

How Do Dutch Ovens Work?

Some Dutch ovens are designed for use in home kitchens while others are designed for use at a campsite. The styles are slightly different but they basically work the same.

The heavy pot has a tight-fitting lid which retains heat for a long time and produces the most effective heat distribution method, circulating the heat around the food resulting in very even cooking.

They can be used inside an oven, on a stovetop or on a grill. Additionally, camp ovens are specially designed to be used with campfire coals or charcoal briquettes too.

If you’re camping without fire during a fire ban, you can easily place your pot over a propane stove or gas grill to use in recipes that require bottom-heat only.

But, what if you have a recipe that is baked and you need heat to circulate up the walls and over the top of the lid? That’s when you need a dome and heat diffuser plate. This would be the case when baking things like lasagnas, casseroles, cakes, breads and cobblers.

What Is A Dutch Oven Dome?

A Dutch oven dome is made from a fire-resistant fabric. It is placed over the top of the oven that is set on a stove. The Dutch oven dome traps heat and diverts it up the outside walls of the pot and over the top of the lid creating a type of convection oven.

You can purchase the dome alone but you’ll usually find it is sold with a heat diffuser plate. The plate is set over the flame of the stove and the Dutch oven is set on top of the plate. The purpose of the plate is to spread the heat across the bottom of the oven rather than it being concentrated in just the center of the pot.

The combination found in the Camp Chef cooking system works beautifully.

  • The combination of the included heat diffuser plate and dome set is 3.1 lbs, size 18″W x 11.5″H
  • The specifications are acceptable to most campers, but, not appropriate for ultra-light backpackers who count every ounce.

Camp Chef is the manufacturer of the set but it does not work only with a Camp Chef stove, it works with any brand of camp propane gas stove.

My dome is a little older, it is a light color (you’ll see it in my videos), the most recent version is black which is much nicer for camping.

How Do You Use A Dutch Oven Dome?

  1. Place the heat diffuser plate on your stove, center the plate over the flame.
  2. Place the Dutch oven on top of the plate, ensure the pot is centered in the middle of the plate.
  3. Place lid on the oven.
  4. To pre-heat the oven for baking, turn on the burner to the proper temperature setting to pre-heat the pot. Low-mid heat works best.
  5. Unfold fabric dome and place over the covered Dutch oven. The air vent in the dome will be centered over the lid’s handle. The bottom of the dome should set on the surface of the stove. Use gloves when handling the dome, the fire-resistant fabric can be itchy to the touch and it does get hot during the cooking process.
  6. Prep recipe as necessary.
  7. Remove the dome and lid from the pre-heated oven.
  8. Add ingredients into the pre-heated oven.
  9. Replace the Dutch oven lid and cover with dome to bake according to recipe directions. Use gloves to remove dome and Dutch oven lid to check for doneness.
  10. When recipe is done baking, turn off the stove.
  11. Use gloves to remove dome and Dutch oven lid. Both will be hot so you’ll need to set them on a surface to cool.
  12. Serve your meal.
  13. Once cooled, store the heat diffuser plate along with the folded Dutch oven dome. I just place them inside my main Dutch oven, cover with lid and place inside my carrying case.

Why I Like This Accessory

This is one of my best Dutch oven accessories because I don’t have to change my camp menu! We live in Arizona and are often camping during burn bans, this gadget allows me to bake all of my favorite meals without the use of charcoal briquettes or a campfire.

This is a nice alternative device instead of changing your entire menu to recipes that are grilled on a propane camp grill during times of fire restrictions. Note: Your local ranger station will have information regarding the status of restrictions.

You can zoom through the pre-heat process because you just place the oven on the stove and turn on the flame. There’s no waiting for charcoal to catch or campfire wood to burn down to produce coals.

Cooking with propane means you don’t have the mess of charcoal. That means you can have a great experience using your cast iron cookware at your campsite or on your back patio without having to clean-up ashes.

The fabric dome folds flat for easy storage along with the diffuser plate.

It works best with a 12-inch standard-depth 6 quart Dutch oven which is the most common size for campers. When people ask me: What size Dutch oven for camping? This is the size I recommend the majority of the time.

Can Dutch Ovens Go On The Stove?

Yes, home and camp ovens can be used on a stovetop.
